Along with practices in transit planning, paratransit and accessible and alternative transportation, the practice areas above focus on Nelson\Nygaard’s mission: to help develop livable communities with sustained solutions for improving mobility, generating economic development, and reducing dependence on the private automobile. N\N's work emphasizes creative, innovative transportation planning and community involvement.
Responsibilities
The successful candidate will work as part of a highly regarded professional team focusing on the three practices above and will assume key roles in project management, marketing, and business development. She or he will have the opportunity to work closely with staff in our New York, San Francisco, Portland, and Seattle offices.
Though most of the work will focus on projects in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions, there will be numerous opportunities for the candidate to contribute to N\N projects across the United States. Candidates must be willing to travel (on average 2-4 overnight stays per month plus numerous day trips) and must have a valid Driver’s License.
Qualifications and Requirements
The ideal candidate should have a broad range of transportation and urban planning experience, but at the very least should be able to demonstrate significant expertise in the practice areas above. Candidates must also meet the following three requirements to be considered:
- At least 6 years of increasingly responsible experience in multi-modal transportation planning
- Sustained, successful experience in business development, i.e., bringing in projects
- A Master's Degree in city or urban planning, transportation engineering, or a related planning field, or equivalent experience.
In addition, candidates must be able to demonstrate excellent written and verbal skills, the ability to manage projects within budget, work with clients and members of the public, prepare reports and successful proposals, as well as perform technical analysis, feasibility studies, and make presentations. She or he also will be expected to be responsible for identifying and winning at least $150,000 of project work for N\N. Successful experience in working with and mentoring junior staff is also desirable.
Salary and Benefits
All employees are paid an hourly rate. The annual salary range equivalent for this position is $75,000 to $90,000, depending on qualifications and years of experience. This is an outstanding opportunity for the right person to become involved in building N\N's practice, which is focused on multi-modal transportation planning for livable communities. N\N's work emphasizes creative, innovative transit/transportation planning and community involvement, often within a wider set of goals such as economic development and reduced dependence on the private automobile.
Responsibilities
The successful candidate will work as part of a highly regarded professional team focusing on transit and multimodal transportation planning and will assume key roles in project management, marketing and business development. He or she will have the opportunity to work closely with the staff in our New York, San Francisco, Portland, and Seattle offices.

- Comprehensive Operational Analysis (COA)
- Transit/shuttle service design, planning and operations
- Bus Rapid Transit/Rapid Bus
- Light rail, commuter rail, and/or streetcar
- Intelligent transit systems and technology
- Transit policy, funding and governance
- Fare system pricing, policy and technology
- Multimodal/Intermodal facility planning
- Customer services, transit marketing and information systems
- Data collection and performance assessments
- Multi-system coordination
- Scheduling and runcutting
- Paratransit and demand-responsive services
- Coordination of community transportation services
- Campus transportation planning
Candidates must also meet the following three requirements to be considered:
