Responsibilities

Successful applicants will be expected to:

  • Function as a project manager for small studies and as a lead planner for complex components of large projects

  • Outline and prepare successful proposals and reports
  • Analyze a wide range of transportation data and complete (directly or manage the completion of) technical analysis, feasibility studies, or other transportation reports

Qualifications and Requirements

The ideal candidate will have a broad range of transportation and urban planning experience. At a minimum, the candidate should meet the following qualifications:

  • At least six years of responsible experience in transportation planning, traffic engineering, or one of the disciplines listed above.
  • A bachelor’s or more advanced degree in urban or transportation planning, or a related planning field. Master’s degree is preferred.
  • Skills and enthusiasm for business development.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and other communication skills, including facilitating public workshops.
  • The ability to manage complex projects on time and on budget.
  • Demonstrate advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, and Powerpoint.
  • Additional experience with GIS, Graphic (InDesign, Illustrator, SketchUp), Modeling (Synchro, VISSIM, TransCAD) or database anlaysis will be considered favorably.

Though most of the work will come from projects from the Boston office, there will be numerous opportunities for the candidate to contribute to projects across the United States. Candidates must be willing to travel and must have a valid Driver’s License.  Preference will be given to candidates with AICP or P.E. certification.

Senior Associate – Paratransit and Coordination/Mobility Management

Nelson\Nygaard Consulting Associates (N\N) seeks a senior planner experienced in paratransit planning, human service transportation coordination and mobility management.  With a nationally-recognized practice in these areas Nelson\Nygaard is committed to improving access and mobility, especially for persons who are dependent on specialized and/or demand-responsive transportation.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will work as part of a highly regarded professional team and will assume key roles in project management, proposal writing / business development, and staff development.  While the successful candidate will be based in the firm’s Boston office, he or she will have the opportunity to work closely with the staff in our other east coast offices (New York, Washington, DC, Atlanta, and Jacksonville) and our west coast offices (San Francisco, Portland, and Seattle). Candidates must be willing to travel (on average 2-4 overnight stays per month plus numerous day trips) and must have a valid Driver’s License.

Qualifications and Requirements

The ideal candidate should have a Master's Degree in city or urban planning and at least 6 years experience of increasingly responsible experience in consulting, planning, and/or operations in the following areas:

  • Paratransit Planning - ADA, Dial-A-Ride, Demand-Responsive Transportation
  • Coordination of Human Service Transportation / Community Transportation and Mobility Management

A minimum of three additional years of work experience in these areas can substitute for the Master’s degree requirement.  All work experience can be in either the public or private sectors.    Absent private sector experience with business development, the candidate should present evidence of relevant skills or background that could lead to business development acumen.

In addition, candidates must be able to demonstrate excellent written, verbal and analytical skills as well as the ability to manage projects within budget; work with a variety of stakeholders, customers and members of the public; prepare reports, presentations and successful proposals; perform technical analysis and feasibility studies; facilitate groups of stakeholders; make presentations; and mentor junior staff.

Salary and Benefits

All employees are paid an hourly rate.  The annual salary range equivalent for this position is $80,000 to $100,000, depending on qualifications and years of experience. Principal Planner – Public Transit Services

We are in the process of expanding our national transit practice and are seeking a highly organized, independent, forward-thinking Principal Transit Planner for our San Francisco office.


Responsibilities

Our San Francisco Transit Principal will be expected to:

  • Aggressively participate in Business Development and Marketing Activities, and pursue new work in a cost effective manner
  • Directly manage a team of 3 to 6 junior and/or senior planners
  • Manage studies for mid size (100 to 150 buses) and large size (larger than 200 buses) systems.  These studies include Comprehensive Operations Analysis, Long Range Plans, Line by Line Studies, Transit Development Plans, etc.
  • Mentor/train junior staff
  • Participate in firmwide strategic planning activities on an as-needed basis
  • Attend conferences on an as-needed basis

Projects may be located anywhere throughout the US and possibly even overseas, and thus a willingness, and desire, to travel is essential.

Qualifications and Requirements

The successful candidate must demonstrate

  • You must have at least 10 years of increasingly responsible experience in public transit planning.
  • You must demonstrate successful and sustained experience in business development, i.e., winning work. If you are coming directly from a government agency then you must be able to convince us that you will be able to do this within one or two years of starting at Nelson\Nygaard.
  • You must have at least a Bachelor’s Degree in city/urban planning, transportation engineering or related planning field, or equivalent experience. A Master’s Degree in one of these fields is highly preferred.

In addition, you must be able to demonstrate excellent written and verbal skills, the ability to manage projects within budget, work successfully with clients, members of the public and your team members, prepare reports and successful proposals, perform technical analysis, feasibility studies, make presentations and solve problems.

Finally, you must be someone who we want to work with and who our clients want to work with. We will help you develop your skills, but we also expect you to use your skills to help our junior staff to develop theirs.

Senior Associate – Complete Streets Engineer

We are seeking a highly organized, independent, forward-thinking Senior Associate with expertise in traffic engineering and complete streets design to expand this practice area. The right candidate will help shape our practice, which works to transform streets to make them useable and attractive to people walking, bicycling, driving, and using transit. Our multimodal and consensus-building approach has made Nelson\Nygaard market leaders in complete streets design and policy.

Responsibilities

A Senior Associate has multiple responsibilities. You will be expected to win and manage medium to small projects, have major roles in large projects, and provide guidance to the office’s excellent junior staff. Within a few years, we expect you to win and manage large projects.

You will be based in San Francisco. Your projects may be located anywhere throughout the U.S. and possibly overseas, and thus a willingness and wish to travel is desirable. Initially, the Senior Associate will work primarily on Bay Area projects and elsewhere in California. You will work closely with Nelson\Nygaard’s senior and junior staff in San Francisco, and also with staff in our other offices nationwide. Our approach is to bring the most appropriate staff together, irrespective of where they are based. We believe that working together across offices produces better outcomes and improves all of our skills.

Qualifications and Requirements

Candidates must meet the following requirements to be considered:

  • Five years of increasingly responsible experience in traffic engineering, civil engineering, and/or transportation planning.
  • A bachelor’s or more advanced degree in civil engineering, transportation engineering, traffic engineering or a related field, or equivalent experience. A master’s degree in one of these fields is highly preferred.
  • Skills and enthusiasm for business development. Please describe your strategy for winning new clients.
  • Excellent written, verbal and other communication skills, including facilitating public workshops, and making compelling presentations. Please send us samples of your work.
  • The ability to manage complex projects on time and on budget.
  • A commitment to the principles of Complete Streets design, and experience with conceptual design and corridor plans that integrate all modes. Please include a sample of your conceptual design work, especially built projects.

Proposal/Marketing Coordinator

Nelson\Nygaard Consulting Associates seeks a highly organized and motivated full timeProposal/Marketing Coordinator for its New York office. The Proposal/Marketing Coordinator will work under the direct supervision of the Opportunity Development Manager and local guidance under New York management. This position will primarily help to support Nelson\Nygaard’s New York, Washington DC, and Atlanta offices. The work will entail full proposal preparation, business development, administrative support, and some general office support. The successful candidate must possess high levels of confidence, initiative, intuition and a strong ability to coordinate efforts and form consensus between corporate headquarters (San Francisco, CA) and satellite office employees. The position will be located in New York, NY and upon acceptance of the position the candidate must be willing to go to San Francisco, CA for an extended training period (up to two weeks).

Responsibilities

The Proposal/Marketing Coordinator has one primary function and several secondary functions.

Proposal Development - The Proposal/Marketing Coordinator will actively engage in preparing proposal responses.  Under the supervision of the Marketing Manager, the Proposal/Marketing Coordinator will develop all non-scope related content: cover letters, firm introduction, references, staff cameos, and résumés. Because each proposal needs to be written to the specific topic of that RFP, the Proposal/Marketing Coordinator must exhibit excellent writing and organizational skills. Proposals are typically prepared in MS Word so excellent Word skills are a requirement. Proposals are also occasionally written in InDesign so skills in that software are a necessity. Excellent editing skills are a must.

Business Development - The Proposal/Marketing Coordinator will assist in identifying and preparing on-call and prequalification packages, updating and maintaining electronic versions of résumés, engaging in RFP searches, and creating new project profiles using MS Word formats and InDesign. The Proposal/Marketing Coordinator will also assist in the creation of general marketing packages through the coordination of the marketing department.

Administrative Support - The Proposal/Marketing Coordinator will conduct various admin tasks including: Initiating coordination of deliverables between the satellite offices and Creative Services and GIS Departments; new employee orientation and training, and general office administrative functions.

Candidates should have a B.A./B.S. in a related field such as journalism, business, planning or marketing. At least one year of directly related experience preparing proposals for an engineering, architectural, or planning firm is necessary. The candidate must be able to demonstrate strong skills in Microsoft Word, InDesign, PowerPoint and Excel and skills. Basic HTML skills with Dreamweaver experience, although not required, is a plus. Potential candidates must be able to demonstrate excellent writing skills and will be asked to complete a writing and software skills test.

Salary and Benefits
