Senior Transit Service Planner

Nelson\Nygaard Consulting Associates is a mid-sized sustainable transportation planning firm, committed to developing compelling alternatives to drive-alone transportation. Sustainable transportation is literally all we do. Our approximately 90 firmwide staff exclusively focus on conducting projects that promote increased transit, bicycling, and walking mode share. Our primary areas of expertise include transit planning, multi-modal transportation, Transportation Demand Management (TDM), parking management for smart growth objectives, pedestrian and bicycle planning, paratransit and community transportation, and other related disciplines. Our transit planning practice is one of Nelson\Nygaard's core practice areas. It specializes in projects that transform the way transit systems operate, making them more efficient for transit agencies and more useful and attractive to their passengers, and we do it in a manner that supports our goal of creating more livable communities. We are currently seeking to expand our transit practice and are seeking one highly organized, independent, forward-thinking Senior Public Transit Planner for its Boston office.

Responsibilities

Being a Senior Transit Planner involves multiple responsibilities. You will be based in Boston. You will be expected to be able to manage and win medium to small projects, have major roles in large projects, and provide guidance to the office’s excellent junior staff. Within a few years, we expect that you will be managing and winning large projects.

Your projects may be located anywhere throughout the US and possibly even overseas, and thus a willingness, and desire, to travel is essential. You will work closely with Nelson\Nygaard’s senior and junior staff in our local Boston office, and also with staff in our other offices throughout the country. Our approach is to bring the most appropriate staff together, irrespective of where they are based, as working together produces better outcomes and improves all of our skills.

 

Qualifications and Requirements

The ideal candidate should have a strong core focus in transit planning, but may also have a broad range of transportation and urban planning experience. At the very least a candidate should be able to demonstrate significant expertise in at least five of the following areas:

  • Short and Long Range Transit Planning
  • Comprehensive Operational Analysis (COA)
  • Transit/shuttle service design, planning and operations
  • Bus Rapid Transit/Rapid Bus
  • Light rail, commuter rail, and/or streetcar
  • Intelligent transit systems and technology
  • Transit policy, funding and governance
  • Fare system pricing, policy and technology
  • Multimodal/Intermodal facility planning
  • Customer services, transit marketing and information systems
  • Data collection and performance assessment
  • Multi-system coordination
  • Scheduling and runcutting
  • Paratransit and demand-responsive services
  • Coordination of community transportation services
  • Campus transportation planning

Candidates must also meet the following three requirements to be considered:

  1. You must have at least 6 years of increasingly responsible experience in public transit planning.
  2. You must demonstrate successful and sustained experience in business development, i.e., bringing in projects. 
    If you are coming from a government agency, you must be able to convince us that you will be able to do this within one or two years of starting at Nelson\Nygaard.
  3. You must have at least a Bachelor’s Degree in city/urban planning, transportation engineering or related planning field, or equivalent experience. A Master’s Degree in one of these fields is highly preferred

In addition, you must be able to demonstrate excellent written and verbal skills, the ability to manage projects within budget, work successfully with clients, members of the public and your team members, prepare reports and successful proposals, perform technical analysis, feasibility studies, make presentations and solve problems.

Finally, you must be someone who we want to work with and who our clients want to work with. We will help you develop your skills, but we also expect you to use your skills to help our junior staff to develop theirs.

The annual salary range equivalent for this position is $80,000 to $100,000, depending on qualifications and years of experience.

Intern – Transit/Paratransit Planning (Full-Time)

Nelson\Nygaard Consulting Associates is seeking a highly organized, independent and motivated intern for its Boston office primarily to support the firm’s practices in transit planning and paratransit and community transportation.

The right candidate must be interested and have experience in both areas.  The intern will spend approximately half of his/her time supporting transit service planning projects and the other half on paratransit planning, human service transportation coordination/mobility management, and taxi regulatory studies.

Other types of projects that the successful intern may be asked to support include multi-modal transportation and non-motorized transportation planning projects, and smart parking and transportation demand management projects.

Responsibilities

Intern responsibilities will depend on the specific needs of transit and paratransit planning projects that are being undertaken but will likely include research, data collection, performance analyses, support/field work, and possibly some business development tasks.

Qualifications

In preferential order, the ideal candidate would be someone who (1) holds a Masters in Planning with a specialization in transportation planning; or (2) has a BA in a related field and is interested in gaining experience prior to entering such a Masters program.  Solid experience with MS Excel is a must. Above all, we are looking for someone who has a passion for both public transit and paratransit, and is interested in making a difference for our clients and their constituents.

Internship Duration

We are looking for a candidate who is interested in an internship that would last from 6 to 12 months.

  2. If you are coming from a government agency, you must be able to convince us that you will be able to do this within one or two years of starting at Nelson\Nygaard.
  3. You must have at least a Bachelor’s Degree in city/urban planning, transportation engineering or related planning field, or equivalent experience.  A Master’s Degree in one of these fields is preferred.
  4.
