Traffic Engineering Overview
Design, Operations, Forecasting & Trip Reduction
Nelson\Nygaard provides a full range of transportation planning and traffic engineering services. We design transportation systems, evaluate operations, prepare travel demand forecasts, and develop trip reduction strategies to support our clients’ efforts to build better communities and maximize mobility.

Our multi-modal approach sets us apart from our peers. Nelson\Nygaard is a unique firm that has always placed an emphasis on balancing the needs of bicyclists, motorists, pedestrians and transit. Our traffic engineering services include:

  • Multi-modal Design
  • Traffic Operations
  • Travel Demand Forecasting
  • Vehicle Trip Reduction

We have designed streets, paths, corridors, and transit centers for big cities, small towns, university campuses, and overseas emirates. Our goal is the creation of complete streets and balanced transportation systems that maximize mobility for all users and support broader community goals.
Our staff has performed traffic operations analyses using SYNCRHO and TRAFFIX software to evaluate signal operations, determine vehicle and person delay, and assess level of service (based on both HCM and multi-modal LOS thresholds). This includes operational studies conducted for citywide plans, large-scale development efforts, and impact studies, as well as operational studies conducted for the purpose of testing and refining potential street and corridor design concepts.
Our travel demand forecasts accurately reflect the location, design and mix of land uses. In addition, we are an industry leader in developing effective parking and transportation demand management (TDM) strategies to reduce motor vehicle trips and greenhouse gas emissions.
