National Parks/Recreational
Nelson\Nygaard has worked with the National
Park Service on multiple projects designedto preserve natural
resources and enhance the visitor experience by reducing the
impact ofauto use and parking within parks sites. Through
data collection, analysis of travel patterns, and transportation
marketing, Nelson\Nygaard has developed and evaluated shuttles
within the parks, enhanced bicycle and pedestrian access,
and managed parking programs.
Muir Woods Shuttle Design and Evaluation
Nelson\Nygaard designed a shuttle linking
three off-sitepark and ride locations with the Muir Woods
NationalMonument, one of the most visited sites in the NPS
system. The shuttle was designed as a three-year pilotproject
with earmarked federal funding and a partnershipbetween the
National Park Service, the County of Marin and Golden Gate
Transit. The shuttle is now in its third year, carrying more
than twice the initial number of passengers, with expanded
service frequencies, service span and new service linking
the shuttle to the Sausalito Ferry.
Golden Gate National Recreation Area
– Marin Headlands Transportation Master Plan and Environmental
Assessment
Nelson\Nygaard developed a Transportation
Master Plan for the Marin Headlands/Ft. Baker parklands in
Marin County California. The plan integrates the development
of Ft. Baker, a new addition to the parklands, which is being
developed to include a conference hotel and other amenities.
The project involved developing an extensive transportation
demand management for the park, shuttle services and cooperation
with local transit operators. The plan was subsequently analyzed
in an Environmental Impact Study, which is scheduled for completion
at the end of 2007.
Sedona Arizona Transit Study
The City of Sedona Arizona is surrounded
by National Forestlands, and is built essentially inside
one of the most fragile natural environments imaginable.
Until 2005 visitors had no options for traveling into the
“Red Rock Country” other than driving themselves or taking
one of the many “jeep tours” into the back country. The
Sedona Shuttle, designed by Nelson\Nygaard, provides service
for both local an visitor needs in the City of Sedona and
provides access to many of the key visitor destinations
in the National Forest.
