Never Fear, Guaranteed Ride Home is Here...In 1998, Nelson\Nygaard developed and implemented a
Guaranteed Ride Home Program in Alameda County, California for the Alameda County Congestion Management Agency (CMA). We have been operating this program since that time and are very proud of the impact it has had on the number of people using alternative modes of transportation.
What is the Guaranteed Ride Home Program? The program is available to employees of any Alameda County employer with 100 or more employees. Participating employees can get a ride home in case of illness or crisis, unscheduled overtime, if their ridesharing vehicle breaks down or if the driver has to stay late or leave early. The program covers employees on the days they ride transit (including ferries, buses, and trains), carpool, vanpool, bicycle or walk to work, even if they only do it once a year! If an unexpected event leaves an employee stranded, he or she can call a participating taxi company to get a ride home up to 100 miles away. The service is free not only to the employee, but also to the employer.
Vital Statistics:
- The program currently has 123 employers and 2,615 employees registered.
- About 400 trips have been taken since the program's inception.
- The average cost per trip is about $65.00.
- The average commute distance is about 35 miles.
Increasing the Use of Alternative Modes
The following figure shows the growing impact of the Guaranteed Ride Home Program over the last three years. This data is based on survey results from an annual program evaluation.
