  • Transportation Master Plans for universities and college towns, including University of Colorado; City of Boulder; University of California, Davis; Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Each of these projects examined how the college and city could work together to accommodate significant growth while improving community livability. They also recommended the best relative investment in new parking versus new TDM programs to meet a range of goals.

  • Growth visioning and integrated transportation and land use planning. Managed two projects for the Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG) and the Westside Cities of Beverly Hills, Culver City, Santa Monica & West Hollywood. Provided analysis and feedback on growth visioning projections; Developed and evaluated alternative growth scenarios; Conducted successful community workshop and survey; Analyzed transportation alternatives for the regional transportation plan (RTP); Participated in the RTP process on behalf of the subregion; Provided policy advice on urban development.
  • Induced travel demand. For the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Undertook research and prepared highly accessible outreach documents on the relationship between transportation investment and travel demand; Developed and delivered a pilot training session for EPA Regional Staff and other officials; Provided technical support to Regional Staff on specific projects and concerns.
  • Traffic safety analysis. For the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT). Undertook a literature review on remedies for driver error; Developed a survey instrument for surveying all state DOTs; Conducted follow-up interviews with best practice agencies; Prepared a user-friendly reference document, final report and presentation regarding remedies for driver error.
  • Transportation energy analysis. Coordinated project for California Department of Transportation (Caltrans). Managed a team of transportation, energy, environment, planning and technology experts; Generated a series of interrelated reports on transportation energy issues and policies with a focus on the strategic and planning requirements of Caltrans; Authored reports on sustainability, impacts and planning.
  • Freight forecasting. Two projects for the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT). Developed freight forecasting model including alpha testing and module design for internal, through traffic and hazardous goods movement trips. Applied model to freight assessment to sample locations for a Tier 1 EIS for the I-81 Corridor.
  • Regional economic development. Managed project for the County of Fresno to revise the Economic Development Strategy for Western Fresno. Identified and worked in consultation with a task force comprising County officials and community leaders from a wide area and diverse interests; Undertook economic assessment of priority industries; Surveyed priority industry businesses and conducted community meeting; Undertook site visits and interviewed city managers and key stakeholders; Synthesized alternative development scenarios and assessed economic impacts.

  • Undertook analysis for Caltrans on induced travel demand on California State Highways; Collected, filtered and undertook statistical analysis of route segment data on exurban freeways which were expanded within a 20-year period.
  • Contributed to a United Nations Commission on Human Settlements Programme (UNCHS) project on informal transportation in developing world cities; Analyzed informal modes, operation, regulation and organization in Jakarta, Indonesia; Nairobi, Kenya; Kumasi, Ghana; and Lagos, Nigeria; Contributed to a UNCHS report on Informal Transport: Mobility Options for the Developing World.

  • Assisted in developing a Strategic Plan for the Australian Transport Council (ATC) - comprising all state and federal transport-related ministers in Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea; Presented components of the Strategic Plan at ATC meetings; Liaised with heads of transport-related departments to synthesize policy principles and objectives for transport in Australia. Initiated Federal involvement and provided Federal input on bicycle transport policy; Participated in the development of 'Australia Cycling: The National Strategy'.
