Derek Cheah

Associate Principal
Derek leads multidisciplinary teams to deliver evidence-based guidance to address clients' transportation needs.

Derek is a transportation planner and project manager with 10 years of experience working with clients and stakeholders at all levels of government and the private sector. To inform his guidance to clients, he enjoys drawing on various research and analysis methods, alongside a deep understanding of the surrounding policy context. His work has spanned multiple state, regional, and local geographies; as well as a wide range of modes, including intercity and regional rail, urban transit, and shared micromobility.

Derek has collaborated with clients, stakeholders, and teaming partners to articulate the case for various transportation investments, from large capital projects to incremental transit service improvements. Most recently, he managed a team of 50+ consultants and a portfolio of strategic planning services to transform rail service in Northern California under the Link21 program. He led the development and implementation of a multi-phase business case framework, which advanced the effort from program definition through several iterative rounds of alternatives development, evaluation, and refinement.
